## Description

AJet and Turkish Airlines are the only scheduled carriers at Hakkari Yüksekova Selahaddin Eyyubi Airport (IATA: YKO, ICAO: LTCW), which handled about 172,300 passengers in 2025 — roughly ten per cent more than the year before — and offers no cargo handling at all. Opened in 2015 in the far southeast of Turkey near the Iraqi and Iranian borders, the airport is designed for up to one million passengers and sits at around 1,950 m elevation, which noticeably limits payload for larger aircraft. Scheduled service includes about three weekly rotations to Istanbul (IST) plus seasonal domestic links, with ground handling provided by Çelebi. Without a freight terminal, cold-chain facilities or an air-cargo customs office, shipments can travel only as belly cargo on passenger flights. The province's real goods flows run by road: the Esendere crossing leads into Iran and Habur near Silopi into Iraq, both established customs routes for trucking. For genuine air freight the practical gateways are Van Ferit Melen (VAN), roughly 200 road kilometres to the northwest, and Gaziantep (GZT) about 700 kilometres west, with intercontinental consignments moving through the Istanbul hubs. Project cargo and dangerous goods are therefore trucked in from those airports rather than flown to YKO.
