## Description

Some 380,100 tonnes of cargo, mail and baggage moved through Haikou Meilan in 2025, of which roughly 215,750 tonnes was freight proper — modest by hub standards, but climbing fast. The lever is the Hainan Free Trade Port, whose zero-tariff and low-tax regime draws cross-border trade to the island. International transit cargo reached about 8,190 tonnes by December 2025, up 99.5 percent year on year, while international cargo and mail passed 16,600 tonnes by mid-September. Six international freight routes now span Europe, West Asia and the Middle East. In September 2025 Georgian Airways opened a Tbilisi–Haikou–Paris fifth-freedom service, flown weekly with B767 freighters and carrying mainly cross-border e-commerce goods. On 28 February 2026 three new all-cargo routes linked Meilan with Qionghai-Boao airport for the first time, including Qionghai–Bangkok and Haikou–Shenzhen. Typical exports are duty-free consumer items, fresh produce and e-commerce parcels, cleared around the clock under free-port supervision. Roads tie the airport to Haikou and the island's planned duty-free economy.
