## Description

A 20,000 m² terminal handed over in March 2024, after a 16-month build, roughly tripled ground capacity at Gwalior's Rajmata Vijaya Raje Scindia Air Terminal (GWL, ICAO VIGR), which is now sized for 1,400 peak-hour passengers. Civil operations share the runway with Maharajpur Air Force Station, long known as a Mirage 2000 base of the Indian Air Force. The airport recorded more than 500,000 passengers in financial year 2023/24, with IndiGo, Air India Express and Akasa Air serving Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad alongside intra-state links to Indore, Bhopal and Jabalpur. Freight remains marginal: a dedicated cargo terminal has been announced for years but is not confirmed as operational, so only limited belly cargo moves on domestic services. Customs clearance for international air freight is likewise not confirmed here, which is why importers and exporters in northern Madhya Pradesh route shipments through Delhi (DEL), some 320 road kilometres north on NH-44. For distribution inside central India, forwarders use Indore (IDR) instead, which offers considerably more cargo infrastructure. Recent investment at the site includes a 2.5 MW solar plant and rainwater harvesting at the new terminal.
