## Description

Some 200 kilometres northeast of Nanning, the Mengxu airfield at Guiping in Guangxi is a Chinese air force installation with no civil flights, no cargo terminal and no IATA or ICAO code. Its single 09/27 runway serves military traffic only, and no handling agent, customs office or freight airline operates there. Air cargo for the Guigang area is therefore consolidated at Nanning Wuxu (NNG), which handled a record 203,174 tonnes of cargo and mail in 2024, or at Guangzhou Baiyun (CAN) roughly 340 kilometres east for intercontinental lift. Guangxi's civil aviation programme foresees new transport airports for Guigang, Hezhou and Fangchenggang, but until one opens Mengxu stays military. The region's genuine freight strength is water: Guigang's inland port passed 100 million tonnes of throughput in 2020, and the Xi River carries 3,000-tonne vessels year round with daily container sailings towards the Pearl River Delta. Channel upgrades between Nanning and Guigang and the Pinglu Canal now under construction are designed to link Guangxi's inland waterways to the Beibu Gulf ports. The practical forwarding mix is river or rail for bulk and general cargo, with Nanning or Guangzhou for anything that must fly.
