## Description

The Aeronautica Militare is the sole operator of Guidonia Air Base (ICAO: LIRG) near Rome, a military airfield whose single 1,462 m asphalt runway rules out commercial freighter traffic. Its resident units — the Comando Logistico's multipurpose logistics centre, the Scuola di Aerocooperazione, the Air Force selection centre and the 60° Stormo glider school — perform military logistics, not air cargo handling. Opened in 1927 as the home of the Direzione Superiore Studi ed Esperienze, Guidonia was Italy's leading aeronautical research site until that role moved to Pratica di Mare in 1957. There is no cargo terminal, no handling agent and no customs clearance on site, and no freight airline serves the field. Air freight for the Rome metropolitan area is consolidated at Rome Fiumicino (FCO), roughly 45 km southwest and the only airport in Lazio with full-freighter and belly-cargo capability, while Rome Ciampino (CIA), about 25 km south, adds express and courier volumes.
