## Description

More than half of Brazil's air freight moves through Guarulhos Airport (GRU/SBGR) north of São Paulo, making it Latin America's leading cargo gateway. LATAM Cargo, American Airlines Cargo and United Cargo anchor the freighter and belly operation, while TAP Air Portugal has expanded its GRU Connect programme to 37 weekly cargo flights via Salvador, Fortaleza and Brasília into Lisbon. The TECA cargo complex now covers around 200,000 square metres and is being enlarged to roughly 363,000 square metres by 2027, opening space for new market players such as forwarders, ground handlers and e-commerce platforms. Its centrepiece is Brazil's largest cold-chain facility, with 24 cold chambers totalling 33,000 cubic metres, handling 63 percent of the country's pharmaceutical air imports. More than 720 daily flights operated by around 40 national and international airlines connect Guarulhos to 34 countries. In April 2025 operator GRU Airport announced a further BRL 1.4 billion (about USD 239 million) in infrastructure works through 2029, though capacity constraints and ground-handler labour shortages caused delays in cargo tendering for exporters during 2025. The Hélio Smidt and Presidente Dutra highways connect the terminals to the national road network and the port of Santos, where customs and bonded warehouses run around the clock. For freight forwarders, Guarulhos remains South America's principal air import and export point.
