## Description

Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport, also known as Guanacaste Airport, sits 11 kilometres west of Liberia in Costa Rica's dry Pacific northwest and is the country's second-busiest airfield. Its traffic is overwhelmingly leisure: direct flights from the United States and Canada feed the beach resorts of Papagayo, Tamarindo and the Nicoya Peninsula. A single 2,750-metre runway accepts wide-body aircraft up to the Boeing 747. In March 2025 operator Coriport unveiled a $3.3 million, 634-square-metre expansion of the boarding lounges, adding a wider passenger corridor, retail space and flight-information screens — another sign the airport is built around passengers, not freight. On the cargo side the picture stays modest: Swissport and Inter Airport Services handle belly cargo and occasional shipments, but there is no dedicated freighter operation. Agricultural exports from Guanacaste, such as melons and sugarcane products, move by air mainly through the national cargo gateway at San José (SJO). For logistics planners, LIR is best treated as a passenger and tourism airport rather than a freight node.
