Road, not air, is what makes Grootfontein matter: the town in Namibia's Otjozondjupa Region sits on the B8 trunk road of the Trans-Caprivi corridor running from Walvis Bay towards Zambia and the DR Congo. The airfield itself (GFY/FYGF), about four kilometres to the south, is military — a former South African Air Force station that housed the Namibian Air Force headquarters until it moved to Karibib in 2016.
