## Description

681 millimetres of rain in a single weekend, a bulk carrier driven into the wharf and 40,000 tonnes of manganese stranded: Cyclone Megan in March 2024 showed how thin the logistics margin is around Groote Eylandt Airport (GTE/YGTE). The field at Alyangula, in the Gulf of Carpentaria, serves workforce and supply traffic for South32's GEMCO mine — one of the world's largest high-grade manganese producers — and the Anindilyakwa communities on the island. Airnorth operates the scheduled link to Darwin, supplemented by mine charters. There is no freight terminal, no freighter operation and no customs post; manganese ore leaves only by ship, and air consignments move as belly cargo or charter via Darwin (DRW). No road connects the island to the mainland, so heavy and oversize goods arrive by barge from Darwin, with lead times of days to weeks. Ore exports resumed only in May 2025, more than a year after the cyclone and after the wharf had been rebuilt. Gove/Nhulunbuy (GOV) is the other regional airfield worth keeping in mind.
