## Description

A US$147 million programme is rebuilding Grantley Adams International (BGI/TBPB): a new terminal, a longer runway, new security equipment and an explicit expansion of the cargo area, on top of the 60,000 square feet already added to the terminal. Barbados' only air port of entry, at Seawell some 15 kilometres from Bridgetown, handled 1,295,893 passengers in the first half of 2026, 1.3% more than a year earlier, and can take aircraft up to Airbus A380 size. Most freight arrives as belly cargo beneath those tourist flights from North America and Europe, supplemented by dedicated freighters: Amerijet International serves the island with Boeing 757s and 767s from its Miami hub, alongside Caribbean Airlines Cargo and the DHL, FedEx and UPS express networks. Flows are heavily import-skewed – consumer goods, equipment, spare parts and temperature-controlled shipments come in, while exports stay niche. There is no railway on Barbados, so distribution runs entirely by road, with Bridgetown's deep-water port taking the heavy bulk. Import control rests with the Barbados Customs & Excise Department, and for intercontinental volumes Miami (MIA) and San Juan (SJU) remain the upstream consolidation points.
