## Description

A runway of about 1,412 metres and a terminal sized for 120 simultaneous passengers set the scale of Graciosa Airport (GRW/LPGR), on the smallest and least populated island of the central Azores. Opened on 23 April 1983 and operated by SATA Gestão de Aeródromos, it was upgraded under a 6.1 million euro requalification contract awarded in 2021. SATA Air Açores flies daily to Lajes on Terceira and to Ponta Delgada on São Miguel; there is no other scheduled service. There is no commercial cargo operation, no cargo terminal and no freighter traffic — consignments travel as belly load on the regional aircraft, which tightly limits weight and dimensions. Larger volumes reach the island by sea, or route through Lajes/Terceira (TER) or the main Azores gateway at Ponta Delgada (PDL), which also handles customs clearance for third-country goods. As part of the EU customs territory, shipments from mainland Portugal move duty-free, though the Azores apply their own reduced VAT rates.
