## Description

International in name, domestic in practice: Gorno-Altaysk Airport (IATA: RGK, ICAO: UNBG) gained formal international status and a new international terminal in July 2025, yet every scheduled flight still stays inside Russia. Traffic reached 475,000 passengers in 2024, and by August 2026 eight carriers – S7 Airlines, Aeroflot and KrasAvia among the busiest – linked the Altai Republic with twelve Russian airports, led by Novosibirsk and the Moscow fields of Sheremetyevo and Domodedovo. There is no cargo terminal and no freighter service, so air freight travels as belly capacity on passenger aircraft, with the usual limits on weight, volume and dangerous goods. Western sanctions bite indirectly: Russian carriers cut their summer 2026 international network to roughly 32 countries, spare parts and leasing remain constrained, and no foreign service has yet materialised at RGK. Airfield reconstruction and a larger terminal complex are due for completion by 2028, lifting capacity toward 1.5 million passengers a year. Freight for the region realistically moves through Novosibirsk Tolmachevo (OVB) some 450 km north or Barnaul (BAX) about 250 km away, then by truck along the R256 Chuysky Trakt into the mountains; customs clearance for foreign consignments happens at those larger airports, not in Gorno-Altaysk.
