## Description

The National Flying Training Institute (NFTI), a joint venture with Canada's CAE running since 2008, defines Gondia Birsi Airport (GDB/VAGD) in eastern Maharashtra far more than airline traffic does — and the field handles no air cargo at all. In the financial year from April 2025 to March 2026 it recorded 33,661 passengers and 862 aircraft movements. Scheduled service only began in March 2022 under the UDAN regional connectivity scheme and has been erratic: IndiGo and Star Air suspended operations until 31 May 2026, the Hyderabad route ran until 30 April 2026, and a tri-weekly link to Indore with a one-stop connection to Mumbai started on 1 August 2026. There is no cargo terminal, no cold-chain capacity and no customs post; the airport lies about 17 kilometres from the town centre. Air freight for the Gondia district is handled at Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International in Nagpur (NAG), roughly 150 road kilometres west, which operates an international cargo complex with customs clearance. Gondia itself is a significant rail junction on the Howrah–Mumbai corridor, so rice, bulk goods and industrial cargo travel by train and truck in any case, while Raipur (RPR) in Chhattisgarh is a further option for consignments moving east.
