## Description

Since 2008 the United Nations Humanitarian Air Service (UNHAS) has run a base at Goma, flying relief missions to some 50 destinations across the volatile borderlands with Rwanda. Sitting between the Nyiragongo volcano and Lake Kivu, the airport is a principal aid gateway for eastern DR Congo, where conflict and terrain leave roads barely usable. A 2020–2021 modernisation restored the full 3,000-metre asphalt runway, enlarged the apron to hold several A320s and added a new control tower.
