## Description

Yak herds, the Amne Machin range and thin air at 3,787 metres: Golog Maqên (GMQ/ZLGL) is one of China's highest civil airports, with a 3,800-metre runway and no commercial cargo business. It opened on 1 July 2016 and connects the Golog Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in southern Qinghai, near the source region of the Yellow River, with the provincial capital. China Eastern flies to Xining and Tibet Airlines serves Xining and Chengdu–Shuangliu; the airport counted 132,161 passengers in 2021. Altitude is the limiting factor — payload penalties at this elevation are severe, which is one reason freighters stay away. There is no cargo terminal, no dangerous-goods handling and no customs post, so shipments from this sparsely populated grazing region travel by truck on national highways G214 and G345 to Xining. Air freight and customs clearance are handled at Xining Caojiabu (XNN), roughly 450 road kilometres to the north-east, with Chengdu Shuangliu (CTU) or Chengdu Tianfu (TFU) as the south-western alternative.
