## Description

A single 4D-class civil-military runway at 2,842 metres above sea level defines Golmud Airport (GOQ/ZLGM), which handled 362,343 passengers in 2025 and no scheduled freight at all. The airport links Haixi Prefecture in western Qinghai mainly with Xining and Xi'an; a Xi'an–Golmud–Xining rotation was added in February 2025. An expansion completed in 2017 was sized for 750,000 passengers and 2,250 tonnes of cargo by 2025, targets the site has not come close to meeting. There is no cargo terminal and no freighter operation, so Golmud's logistics weight lies on the ground instead. The city is the transhipment point of the Qinghai–Tibet railway and national highway G109 on the overland route to Lhasa, and potash and lithium from the Qarhan Salt Lake — China's largest — leave by rail. Air freight for the region is handled at Xining Caojiabu (XNN), some 780 road kilometres east, with Lanzhou Zhongchuan (LHW) in neighbouring Gansu as a second option.
