## Description

Law 19.640, in force since 1972, created the Área Aduanera Especial of Tierra del Fuego and with it the industrial base that gives Gobernador Ramón Trejo Noel International Airport (RGA, ICAO SAWE) at Río Grande whatever freight character it has. Under that regime the city assembles mobile phones, televisions, notebooks and appliances from imported components, and the resulting flows move almost entirely as belly cargo on Aerolíneas Argentinas services to Buenos Aires, with Cargueros del Sur acting as cargo agent and arranging road feeders along National Route 3 to Ushuaia (USH). There is no scheduled freighter operation; heavy or less time-critical consignments go by sea through the province's ports. That base is now under pressure: Argentina cut import duty on mobile phones from 16 to 8 per cent and then to zero on 15 January 2026, while internal taxes on imported electronics were halved. Río Grande's metalworkers' union responded with production stoppages, and assemblers trimmed shifts and paused investment during 2026. Forwarders should therefore expect volatile volumes out of RGA — and treat special-customs-area documentation as the decisive part of every shipment.
