## Description

Gisenyi Airport (IATA: GYI, ICAO: HRYG) last saw commercial scheduled service in 2013; since then the field on the northern shore of Lake Kivu has handled only occasional government, relief and charter movements. There is no cargo terminal, no handling agent and no air-freight customs post on site, so the airport plays no role in commercial logistics. Rwandan plans to upgrade it to international status have been announced but not implemented. Consignments for north-western Rwanda therefore route through Kigali International (KGL), roughly 150 road kilometres east and about three hours by truck. Goma Airport (GOM) in the DR Congo, immediately across the border, has been closed to civil traffic since late January 2025; a UN helicopter landed there in February 2026 and a full reopening remained under negotiation. For shippers serving the Kivu region, Kigali is in practice the air gateway, with road feeder legs and, for sea freight, the corridors to Dar es Salaam and Mombasa.
