## Description

Bari's airspace serves two very different users: civil traffic at Bari Karol Wojtyła and Eurofighter Typhoons at Gioia del Colle, roughly 35 kilometres to the south. The latter (ICAO LIBV), at about 360 metres, is home to the Aeronautica Militare's 36° Stormo and forms part of southern Italy's air defence, with no scheduled civil or freight flights, no cargo terminal and no customs office. Bari Karol Wojtyła (BRI) is the nearest civil field but is passenger-driven, moving air freight mainly as belly capacity, with Brindisi-Salento (BDS) covering the south of the region. Genuine air cargo capacity for Apulia is therefore usually reached by road feeder service to Italy's main gateways, Rome Fiumicino (FCO) at around five hours' drive and Milan Malpensa (MXP) at roughly ten. Heavy and high-volume consignments also have the port of Bari, with ferry links to Greece and Albania. Planning for this region means treating the road leg as part of the air freight chain rather than an afterthought.
