## Description

Boxed into the upper Indus valley at about 1,460 metres, with Nanga Parbat and the Karakoram ranges on either side, Gilgit Airport (GIL / OPGT) sits in terrain that dictates how it operates. Pakistan International Airlines flies ATR turboprops to Islamabad in roughly 50 minutes, daylight and visual conditions only, so cancellations are frequent and the fallback is a 14-hour drive down the Karakoram Highway. There is no cargo terminal, no cold storage and no customs post at GIL, and no scheduled air freight is handled. Forwarders shipping into Gilgit-Baltistan clear customs at Islamabad International (ISB), some 600 road kilometres south, and truck the goods north. The same corridor continues to the Khunjerab Pass and the Sost dry port on the Chinese border, open only seasonally because of snow, which is the main variable in transit planning. Skardu (KDU) provides the region's second air link and likewise has no freight facilities, so Gilgit remains a passenger and tourism airport rather than a cargo point.
