## Description

GIB, LXGB: behind the codes sits one of aviation's oddities — a runway crossed at grade by a four-lane road, Winston Churchill Avenue, where barriers once halted traffic for every movement until the Kingsway Tunnel opened beneath it in March 2023. Gibraltar Airport lies not in Spain but in the British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula; the runway is owned by the UK Ministry of Defence and operated by the Royal Air Force as RAF Gibraltar. On the civil side the airport handled about 424,000 passengers in 2024, served mainly by British Airways and easyJet to London, Manchester and Bristol. For air freight GIB is marginal: just under 98 tonnes crossed the apron in 2024, essentially express consignments via handler CargoLogicX. Shippers with real volumes move goods by road across the Spanish border at La Línea to the nearest sizeable cargo airport, Málaga (AGP) around 125 kilometres away, while heavy and price-sensitive cargo travels through the Port of Gibraltar, a leading Mediterranean bunkering hub.
