## Description

A military runway inside a capital city rarely stays useful to shippers, and Gia Lam proves the point: the field in Hanoi's Long Bien district is reserved for the Vietnam People's Air Force. Civil and dual-use conversion was ruled out in 2020, leaving military transport and training flights, events such as the Vietnam Defence Expo, and tourist helicopter charters towards Ha Long Bay. There is no cargo terminal, no bonded warehouse and no customs post for air freight. Hanoi's air cargo therefore concentrates at Noi Bai International (HAN), about 30 kilometres to the north-west, which handled roughly 729,000 tonnes in the first nine months of 2025 and serves as northern Vietnam's freight gateway. That volume is fed by the electronics and supplier clusters of Bac Ninh, Thai Nguyen and Vinh Phuc, all within one to two hours of HAN by truck. Cat Bi in Hai Phong (HPH) is the usable alternative for the north, with the added benefit of the adjacent seaport for sea-air combinations.
