## Description

Italy's 6° Stormo has flown from Ghedi, in the province of Brescia, since the Cold War, and is now trading its Tornados for the F-35A Lightning II. The 102° and 154° Gruppo — the "Diavoli Rossi", since July 2025 — already operate the fifth-generation jet, while the 155° Gruppo continues with the Tornado ECR. The base is one of the few European sites in NATO's nuclear sharing arrangement: US B61 bombs are held in hardened WS3 vaults maintained by the US 704th Munitions Support Squadron, and the site was upgraded and certified for the F-35A's nuclear role. For shippers, none of this translates into capacity: Ghedi has no scheduled or freight services, no cargo terminal and no customs office. Air cargo for the Brescia industrial belt moves a few kilometres east through Brescia-Montichiari "Gabriele d'Annunzio" (VBS), which handled 38,568 tonnes in 2024 according to Assaeroporti, up 9.4 percent year on year, with round-the-clock handling. Intercontinental and dangerous-goods shipments generally route via Milan Malpensa (MXP), roughly two hours away by road.
