## Description

Caravans once staged here on the trans-Saharan routes; today Ghadames East (LTD, HLTD) is an airfield largely out of service, with Libya's Airports Authority reviewing its operational status in 2026 while preparations for a reopening continue. The airport serves the oasis town of Ghadames in Libya's far west, close to the tri-border with Tunisia and Algeria, and the old town holds UNESCO World Heritage status. Its last restart came on 13 February 2017, when the municipal council reopened it after three years of closure and Libyan Airlines resumed Mitiga–Ghadames flights; in August 2024 Libyan Arab Armed Forces units deployed into the area, with control of the airport among their objectives. No cargo terminal, handling agent or customs post is confirmed at LTD, so planned air freight for western Libya is handled at Mitiga (MJI) in Tripoli, roughly 600 road kilometres away via Nalut. Tripoli International (TIP) is set to reopen in the fourth quarter of 2026, which would give the region a second option. Until then, freight reaches Ghadames by truck rather than by aircraft.
