## Description

Flying began at Getafe, just south of Madrid, as early as 1911, making it one of Spain's oldest airfields — but today it is a defence and aerospace manufacturing site, not a commercial airport. The Spanish Air and Space Force shares the field with Airbus Defence and Space, whose main Spanish plant here runs the Eurofighter final assembly line, the A330 MRTT tanker conversion centre, A400M maintenance and the SpainSat NG satellite programme. Airbus delivered the first of three A330 MRTT tankers to the Spanish Air and Space Force on 11 April 2025 and the second that October, so factory, test and military flights dominate the runway. There is no civil scheduled or freight traffic here. Air cargo from the Madrid region routes through Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas (MAD, about 25 km), Spain's principal freight hub.
