## Description

Genoa's seaport moves millions of tonnes every year — the city's airport handled less than 1,000 tonnes of airfreight in 2024: few places show as plainly as Genoa Cristoforo Colombo Airport (IATA: GOA, ICAO: LIMJ) how thoroughly Liguria's freight flows belong to the water. The airport literally stands in it: its runway sits on an artificial peninsula off Sestri Ponente, six kilometres west of the city centre. Passenger numbers passed 1.5 million in 2025; a €27.6 million redevelopment with a new East Wing lifted terminal capacity to 3 million passengers, and summer 2026 is planned with around 1.375 million seats, up 10%, helped by a new Aeroitalia base flying to Salerno, Olbia and Alghero. Flown cargo came to roughly 827 tonnes in 2024, down about a third on the year and chiefly courier traffic; cargo-handling capacity is meant to grow alongside the terminal works through 2026. Occasionally things still get spectacular: Antonov widebody freighters up to the An-124 land for project shipments from Genoa's heavy industry, such as turbine components from Ansaldo Energia. Piaggio Aerospace also manufactures aircraft structures on the airport grounds. Most Ligurian airfreight trucks to Milan Malpensa; the A10 motorway starts right at the airport, and the port's container terminals are minutes away.
