## Description

About 111.4 million pounds of freight and mail — roughly 50,500 tonnes — moved through Milwaukee Mitchell International (IATA: MKE, ICAO: KMKE) in 2025, and that was before the biggest construction project in its history opened. The MKE South Air Cargo Center, around 337,000 square feet with room for five Boeing 747-400s at once, has been under construction since February 2025 and is due to open in autumn 2026 at a cost of roughly $80 million. Wisconsin's busiest airport, on the west shore of Lake Michigan, is positioning itself as a freight station in its own right between Chicago O'Hare and Minneapolis — until now many shippers in the state have trucked their air cargo the 145 kilometres to Chicago. Ground links are strong: Interstate 94 runs to Chicago and Minneapolis, Class I railroads (CPKC, Union Pacific, Canadian National) serve the area, and the deep-water Port Milwaukee reaches the Atlantic via the St. Lawrence Seaway. Shippers needing main-deck freighter capacity rather than belly space still fall back on Chicago O'Hare (ORD) or the pure cargo field at Chicago Rockford (RFD, about 155 kilometres away). Passengers fly Delta, American, United, Southwest and Frontier; regional exports run to machinery, medical devices and food products, and Milwaukee is of course Harley-Davidson's global home.
