## Description

From barely 20,000 tonnes to more than a quarter-million in a single year: few cargo stories move as fast as Felipe Ángeles (AIFA). Opened in 2022 on a military site near Zumpango, north of Mexico City, the airport became the capital region's designated freight hub by decree, with all dedicated freighters pushed out of congested MEX from 2023. In the first seven months of 2024 it handled about 261,000 tonnes - nearly twelve times the prior-year figure - and was tracking past 400,000 tonnes for the year, with more than 40 cargo airlines now operating and Lufthansa Cargo shifting its entire Boeing 777 freighter programme here. A purpose-built cargo terminal handles Aduana customs and bonded storage for pharmaceuticals and industrial goods. Operated by the military (SEDENA) at 2,247 metres elevation, the field makes freighter performance a real planning factor. Its main weaknesses are the roughly 45-kilometre distance from the city and still-maturing ground handling, which has at times sent shipments trucking back toward MEX. Highways serve the site, with a suburban rail connection planned. AIFA is, in short, the region's politically mandated but fast-rising freight centre.
