## Description

AIFA (Felipe Ángeles International Airport, IATA: NLU) handled about 406,000 tonnes of air cargo in 2025, just three years after opening on a former military site north of Mexico City. A 2023 government decree pushed every dedicated freighter operation out of congested Mexico City International (MEX) and onto this field, and growth has stayed in double digits since: first-quarter 2026 volume rose 13.9 percent year-on-year, reaching a cumulative 167,263 tonnes by May. More than 40 cargo airlines now operate here, led by Avianca Cargo México, Mas Air and Awesome Cargo as anchor users, while Lufthansa Cargo has relocated its entire Boeing 777 freighter fleet to the airport. The original 16 warehouses have been joined by six more, bringing total storage to 22 buildings and annual capacity to 810,000 tonnes; parking for widebody freighters has grown from five to nine stands, which since 2026 also eases handling of the Boeing 747-8F. A dedicated cargo terminal manages Aduana customs clearance and bonded storage for pharmaceuticals and industrial goods. Operated by the Mexican military (SEDENA) at 2,247 metres elevation, freighter performance planning remains a real factor here. The airport's chief weakness is its roughly 45-kilometre distance from the city centre combined with still-maturing ground handling, which occasionally sends shipments trucking back to MEX; a suburban rail link is planned. AIFA is, in short, Mexico's politically mandated but fastest-growing freight centre.
