## Description

Bodh Gaya, the site of the Buddha's enlightenment, gives Gaya Airport (IATA: GAY, ICAO: VEGY) its purpose: the Bihar airfield is one of India's busiest seasonal pilgrimage gateways, hosting scheduled and charter flights from about six Buddhist-majority countries — Thailand, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Vietnam and Singapore — between October and March, with Bhutan's Drukair the most constant operator. Passenger numbers have been rising around 15 percent year on year, and the airport doubles as the Hajj embarkation point for Bihar alongside a modest year-round domestic schedule. The terminal covers roughly 7,500 square metres, is sized for 500 passengers and five A320-class stands, and a runway extension on some 100 additional acres is planned. Freight capability is minimal and honest reporting demands saying so: a dedicated cargo terminal has been announced but not built, there are no freighter services and no integrator presence, and everything that flies goes as belly cargo in passenger aircraft. Customs operates only around the seasonal passenger programme, and there is no continuous cold chain. Forwarders serving southern Bihar therefore route through Patna (PAT) about 110 kilometres north, or through the cargo airports of Kolkata (CCU) and Delhi (DEL), roughly eight and over twenty hours away by road respectively.
