## Description

Eight wide-body freighters can now stand and be worked at the same time at Gary/Chicago International Airport (GYY), where a USD 24 million cargo expansion across roughly 55 acres entered service in summer 2026. UPS has anchored freight here under a long-term lease since 2020, finally giving the long-touted "third Chicago airport" a real cargo function. The build was paid for with more than USD 10 million in congressional Community Project Funding, USD 4 million from the FAA under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and USD 9.8 million in State of Indiana grants, and it also delivered a Jet-A fuel pipeline and a de-icing facility that make winter freighter operations more predictable. The field keeps its own US customs clearance (CBP port 3905). It sits on the southern shore of Lake Michigan some 25 miles south-east of the Loop, with immediate access to Interstates 80/94 and 90 and to the trucking network of the whole Chicago region. Scheduled passenger flights have been absent since 2013, so there is no belly cargo here; everything arrives on a pure freighter. For intercontinental shipments or a wider choice of carriers, O'Hare (ORD) and the freight airport at Rockford (RFD) remain the region's first stop.
