## Description

Garoua International (GOU / FKKR) was built to a standard its traffic never matched: the airport in northern Cameroon received a 3,400-metre runway and international status in the late 1970s and was once listed by NASA as a space-shuttle emergency landing strip. Scheduled service today rests almost entirely on Camair-Co, with around seven weekly flights from Douala plus connections from Yaoundé, supplemented by UNHAS humanitarian operations. There are no freighter services and no cargo terminal — the last publicly documented throughput was about 109 tonnes a year in 2009, no reliable figures have been published since, and what moves today is belly cargo. A rehabilitation programme running since 2025 covers the runway, check-in counters, roof and interior areas and has temporarily restricted wide-body operations; an air security and crisis-management centre was inaugurated on 27 April 2026, and operator Aéroports du Cameroun has scheduled a 2026 study on renewing the aeronautical pavements. The region's real goods flow is overland: sea freight from the port of Douala travels on the Transcameroon railway to its terminus at Ngaoundéré and continues by truck on National Road 1 into the Bénoué basin. Intercontinental air cargo consolidates at Douala (DLA), with Maroua-Salak (MVR) the nearest regional alternative in the far north.
