## Description

Gannan Xiahe Airport (GXH / ZLXH) sits at roughly 3,200 metres above sea level, which places it among the world's highest commercial airfields. Opened on 19 August 2013 in Gansu's Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, it has a 3,200-metre runway but a terminal of only about 3,000 square metres, and Sichuan Airlines serves Chengdu-Tianfu (TFU), Lhasa and Xi'an from here. Most traffic consists of pilgrims and trekkers heading for Labrang Monastery, one of the great centres of Tibetan Buddhism. No freight is processed on site: there is neither a cargo terminal nor a customs post, and any shipment would move as limited belly capacity on passenger flights. Distance works against the airport too — about 72 kilometres of mountain road to Xiahe town and roughly 56 kilometres to the prefecture capital Hezuo. Air cargo for the region is therefore handled at Lanzhou Zhongchuan (LHW) some 200 kilometres north, which has its own freight area and customs clearance, with Xining Caojiabao (XNN) in neighbouring Qinghai as the second option and Chengdu for traffic moving on towards Tibet.
