## Description

As the Maldives' second international gateway, Gan International (GAN) anchors air links for the southern atolls around Addu City. The site began life in 1957 as the Royal Air Force base RAF Gan and passed to Maldivian hands in 1976. Its 2,620-metre runway supports day and night operations, narrow-body airliners and occasional cargo flights, giving the south a freight point that avoids the detour via Malé. A 2023 expansion is adding larger terminals, a new control tower and extra cargo facilities. Even so, the country's intercontinental freight clears through Velana International (MLE) near Malé, with GAN feeding the southern leg. The Cold War heritage still shows in parts of the layout the RAF left behind.
