## Description

Built in 1957 as the Royal Air Force station RAF Gan and handed over to the Maldives in 1976, Gan International (GAN / VRMG) today serves as the country's second international gateway and the air freight point for the southern atolls around Addu City. Volumes remain modest: roughly 829,400 kg of cargo passed through in 2023, of which about 180,500 kg was international. The 2,620-metre runway takes narrow-body aircraft by day and night, yet no dedicated freighter services operate here — goods travel as belly cargo, mainly on the domestic network of state carrier Maldivian. A USD 29.7 million upgrade by Indian contractor Renaatus Projects, under way since March 2023 and around 60 percent complete during 2025, adds a terminal sized for 1.5 million passengers a year plus cold storage, enlarged cargo facilities, a control tower and a fire station, with completion targeted for mid-2026. Surface distribution runs over the Link Road causeway joining Gan, Feydhoo, Maradhoo and Hithadhoo; every other atoll is reached by boat or domestic flight. Intercontinental freight for the Maldives still clears at Velana International (MLE) near Malé, with Colombo (CMB) in Sri Lanka the nearest regional transhipment option.
