## Description

Around 1.06 million passengers used Gagarin International Airport (IATA: GSV, ICAO: UWSG) in 2024, almost all domestic Russian traffic to Moscow, St Petersburg and Sochi. Opened in 2019 to replace the old city-centre Saratov Tsentralny field, it sits about 20 kilometres north of Saratov and is named after cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, who trained in the area. For air freight its role is limited: ground handling and customs exist, but there is no meaningful cargo throughput, and shipments move essentially in passenger belly holds only. Operators needing real freighter capacity or international cargo connections route through the Moscow airports, roughly 850 kilometres to the northwest. Heavy and bulky goods reach the Volga region by road, rail and Volga river barge.
