## Description

Lithium, beryllium and tantalum from the Koktokay No. 3 pegmatite mine once made this corner of northern Xinjiang strategically important; today Fuyun Koktokay Airport (FYN / ZWFY), 939 metres above sea level, serves the same county as a passenger-only regional field with no freight facilities at all. The airport opened on 1 August 2015 and is planned to reach only 350,000 passengers, 5,000 aircraft movements and 800 tonnes of cargo by 2030. China Southern, Tianjin Airlines and Chengdu Airlines operate the schedule, with Urumqi as the core route, daily since January 2026, plus largely seasonal links to Chengdu Tianfu, Lanzhou, Turpan and Yining. There is no cargo terminal and no customs office at FYN, so any shipment travels as belly cargo at best. Mining and tourism, the latter built around the Koktokay UNESCO Global Geopark and the area's ski resorts, define a thin and irregular local freight profile. Road feeder service covers the rest: Altay (AAT) lies about 160 road kilometres away, Urumqi Tianshan International (URC) a good 500 kilometres. URC is where northern Xinjiang's air cargo is consolidated, and its ongoing expansion is set to give it three runways once the southern zone is complete.
