## Description

Tuvalu's entire air link to the world is a single 1,524-metre coral-atoll strip: Funafuti International (FUN, NGFU) is the country's only airport, and the runway doubles as a meeting place and sports ground between flights. Fiji Airways is the sole scheduled carrier, flying ATR 72 turboprops three times a week from Suva and, since 22 August 2025, twice a week from Nadi. Air cargo is therefore limited to small belly consignments such as medicines, urgent mail and spare parts, with no freighters, no cargo terminal and no freight customs facility on the island. Heavy and bulky goods arrive by sea at the Funafuti wharf, which remains the backbone of supply. Exporters and larger shipments route through the Fijian hubs of Suva (SUV) and Nadi (NAN), roughly 1,050 kilometres to the south. The runway itself was rebuilt under the World Bank-funded Tuvalu Safe and Resilient Aviation Project, carried out by New Zealand contractor Downer, to resist king tides and rising sea levels.
