## Description

Opened in 1993 and equipped with a 2,500-metre runway, Fukushima Airport (FKS/RJSF) earned its place in recent Japanese history after the March 2011 Tohoku earthquake, when it stayed operational as a base for relief and evacuation flights. Day to day it is a quiet regional field in the hills near Sukagawa, 372 metres above sea level: ANA flies to Osaka Itami and Sapporo New Chitose, and Tigerair Taiwan operates a twice-weekly scheduled charter to Taipei Taoyuan, a link restored in 2024 after a four-year gap. Cargo is belly load only - there is no freight terminal and no freighter handling at FKS. Customs, immigration and quarantine services are available for the international flights, but routine import and export traffic is handled at Sendai (SDJ) around 100 kilometres north or at Tokyo Narita (NRT), roughly 250 road kilometres away. Trucking uses the Tohoku Expressway via the nearby Sukagawa interchange, while Koriyama, about 25 kilometres from the airport, provides the Shinkansen connection. Prefectural industry - electronics, precision engineering and renewable energy projects from the post-2011 reconstruction - therefore relies on road feeder services to the larger gateways.
