## Description

Fukui Airport (FKJ/RJNF) keeps a 1,200-metre runway, a terminal building and remotely provided air traffic control in operation - but has had no scheduled flights since 1976, ten years after it opened. Neighbouring Komatsu Airport took the jet traffic, and the runway here is too short for airliners. Run by Fukui Prefecture, the field now hosts disaster-response, police and medical helicopters, general aviation, flight schools, gliding - it is the only Japanese commercial airport where gliders operate regularly - and, since 2021, JAXA research flights. The consequence for forwarders is straightforward: no air cargo is handled at FKJ, and the airport has neither a freight terminal nor a customs office. The prefecture's exports, including the eyeglass frames for which Sabae is known, plus textiles, chemicals and machinery, are trucked to Komatsu (KMQ) some 60 kilometres north-east, or to Osaka Kansai (KIX) for long-haul. The Hokuriku Shinkansen extension to Fukui and Tsuruga, opened in March 2024, added a fast rail link towards Tokyo. Business-jet landings at FKJ rose roughly two-and-a-half-fold in fiscal 2024 under a prefectural incentive scheme, and a replacement terminal building is under study.
