## Description

3,570 metres of runway, capacity for Boeing 747 and Airbus A330 wide-bodies, a cargo terminal growing from 324 to 3,800 square metres: Frans Kaisiepo (BIK) is among eastern Indonesia's better-equipped airports. In the 1990s Garuda Indonesia used Biak as a stopover on its trans-Pacific route to the United States, a legacy that helps explain its freight standing. The current expansion adds two five-tonne cold stores and a transhipment warehouse, built around the growing Biak Numfor fisheries sector. Lobster, grouper and shrimp move out of BIK to Jakarta, Denpasar, Makassar, Sentani and Surabaya. This makes Biak a genuine loading point for perishables rather than a passenger-only stop. Intercontinental connections run through Makassar (UPG) and Jakarta.
