## Description

Two runways serve Fort Smith: a 1,829-metre asphalt strip for airline traffic and a short 548-metre gravel-and-asphalt secondary surface. YSM is operated by the Government of the Northwest Territories on the Slave River, close to the Alberta border and the edge of Wood Buffalo National Park. Air Tindi links the town with Yellowknife, Fort Chipewyan and Edmonton, while locally based Northwestern Air flies charter and mine-contract work from the same apron. Because Highway 5 gives year-round road access to Alberta, most goods reach Fort Smith by truck rather than by air. Air cargo is therefore limited to belly loads and urgent shipments, with no freighter service, dedicated cargo terminal or integrator station on site. Forwarders consolidate territorial air freight at Yellowknife (YZF) and move general cargo along the road corridor to Edmonton (YEG).
