Southern Santa Catarina around Criciúma is Brazil's largest ceramic-tile district and a historic coal-mining basin. Forquilhinha-Criciúma Airport (IATA: CCM, officially Diomício Freitas) sits six kilometres from the city centre and has been without scheduled passenger service for about a decade.
