## Description

Belgium's first stealth fighters touched down on 13 October 2025: three F-35A Lightning II jets arrived at Florennes Air Base (ICAO EBFS) to begin replacing the F-16 Fighting Falcons of the 2nd Tactical Wing. Set on a plateau in the pre-Ardennes south of Namur, the base was built during the German wartime occupation and gained Cold War notoriety in the 1980s as a site for American cruise missiles. Belgium has now received 11 of its planned 34 — ultimately 45 — F-35s and is investing some 275 million euros in hangars, shelters and maintenance facilities at Florennes and Kleine-Brogel, with full F-16 replacement targeted for 2028. The site is closed to civil aviation: no IATA code, no scheduled traffic, no cargo terminal and no customs post for commercial goods. Air freight from Namur province and the Charleroi area therefore moves through Liège (LGG/EBLG), Belgium's largest cargo hub about 90 road kilometres to the north-east, or Brussels South Charleroi (CRL/EBCI), barely 30 kilometres north-west. The E42 and E411 motorways link the region quickly to both, and on to Brussels Airport (BRU).
