## Description

Belgium's first stealth fighters touched down on 13 October 2025: three F-35A Lightning II jets arrived at Florennes Air Base to begin replacing the F-16 Fighting Falcons of the 2nd Tactical Wing. Set on a plateau in the pre-Ardennes south of Namur, the base was built during the German wartime occupation and gained Cold War notoriety in the 1980s as a site for American cruise missiles. Belgium has now received 11 of its planned 34 (ultimately 45) F-35s and is investing some €275 million in hangars, shelters and maintenance facilities at Florennes and Kleine-Brogel, with full F-16 replacement targeted for 2028.
