## Description

Tobacco, cotton and soybeans from the Pee Dee still leave by truck — but Florence Regional (FLO/KFLO) is betting on cargo by air. Sitting where Interstates 95 and 20 cross, roughly halfway between New York and Miami, the airport today offers only American Eagle service to Charlotte and has no cargo terminal, so air freight routes through Charleston (CHS) or Columbia (CAE). The centrepiece of its ten-year plan is extending runway 09/27 from about 6,500 feet (roughly 1,980 m) to 8,000 feet (about 2,440 m) at an estimated 33.3 million US dollars including rehabilitation of the existing pavement, with an ultimate target of 10,000 feet that would allow intercontinental freighters. Alongside it come intermodal warehousing, the reactivation of a rail line closed in the 1970s to link the field with Inland Port Dillon and onward to the Port of Charleston, and a planned user fee facility under which US Customs would clear consignments on site for a fee. Until that is in place, forwarders should treat FLO as a trucking point rather than an air-cargo gateway. The region and its university are named for Francis Marion, the Revolutionary War's elusive Swamp Fox.
