## Description

A 1,750-metre runway squeezed between a motorway and hills keeps Florence's airport on a short leash: long-haul jets and freighters simply cannot operate at Amerigo Vespucci Airport Peretola (IATA: FLR, ICAO: LIRQ). The passenger business hardly suffers — 2024 brought a record of roughly 3.5 million travellers, with a strong share of business and city tourism. Toscana Aeroporti, which also runs Pisa and is majority-owned by Argentina's Corporación América Airports, operates the field. That twin structure explains the cargo logic: the Tuscan system's roughly 13,000 annual tonnes move almost entirely through Pisa, where DHL maintains a station — Florence itself has no commercial cargo handling. The region's fashion, leather and machinery exports truck to Pisa or to the hubs at Milan Malpensa and Rome Fiumicino. In November 2025 Italy's environment ministry issued a positive environmental impact assessment for the master plan, which foresees a new runway rotated 90 degrees and lengthened to about 2,400 metres parallel to the A11, plus a terminal crowned by a rooftop vineyard designed by Rafael Viñoly Architects.
