## Description

Built during the Second World War, the airfield at Borcea has become Europe's focal point for F-16 training. As Romania's 86th Air Base it hosts the European F-16 Training Centre (EFTC), inaugurated in late 2023, where Romanian and Ukrainian pilots train on the type; Romania has taken ownership of 18 former Royal Netherlands Air Force F-16AM/BM jets based here. In 2026 the UK Royal Air Force temporarily deployed Eurofighter Typhoons to the base for NATO air-policing duties. It is a purely military field: no scheduled or freighter services, no IATA code and no civilian cargo handling. Road access is good, as the A2 motorway between Bucharest and Constanța crosses the Danube at Fetești close by. Civilian air freight goes through Bucharest Otopeni (OTP/LROP) some 140 kilometres to the west or Constanța Mihail Kogălniceanu (CND/LRCK) a little over 60 kilometres east, the latter directly linked to the Black Sea port of Constanța.
