## Description

Felipe Carrillo Puerto International (IATA: TQO, ICAO: MMTL) opened on 1 December 2023 and has since handled more than two million passengers, over a million of them in 2025 alone, which is unusually fast growth for a greenfield Mexican airport. It sits roughly 20 kilometres southwest of Tulum in Quintana Roo and is run by the state-owned Grupo Aeroportuario Olmeca-Maya-Mexica. The design is built around leisure traffic: no dedicated cargo terminal, freighter operation or resident air cargo handling agent is confirmed here, so freight moves at best as belly capacity on passenger flights. Reliable air cargo for the Caribbean coast still routes through Cancún (CUN) about 130 kilometres north, which has cargo facilities and customs, with Mérida (MID) the second option on the Yucatán peninsula. Mexican airports together moved more than 403,000 tonnes of cargo in the first four months of 2026, while Cancún's volume fell 3.9 per cent over the same period. On the ground, the Tren Maya project foresees freight trains and a cargo terminal at Cancún, which would give the Tulum construction and hotel market a rail-based alternative to trucking. Until then the rule for shippers is simple: clear at Cancún, then run the last leg down Federal Highway 307.
