## Description

Fedotovo, better known by the nearby settlement of Kipelovo, was built for the Cold War task it still performs: hunting submarines over the northern seas with long-range Tupolev Tu-142 maritime patrol aircraft of Russian Naval Aviation, some 44 kilometres west of Vologda. The base carries no IATA code, no scheduled service, no freight handling and no customs post, so it plays no role in commercial logistics. What does matter to shippers is the regulatory picture around it: EU airspace has been closed to Russian aircraft since 28 February 2022 and European carriers cannot overfly Russia, so air freight to and from Russia now moves almost entirely through third countries such as Türkiye, the UAE or Central Asia. EU and Swiss export controls on dual-use and listed goods must be cleared before any booking is made. Civil cargo in the Vologda region is handled at Cherepovets (CEE), close to the local steelworks, and through the major gateways of St Petersburg Pulkovo (LED) and Moscow, with Vologda (VGD) the nearest civil regional airport. Whether the overflight regime reopens remains unresolved; Lufthansa has said it hopes for a return depending on the course of the war, but nothing is confirmed.
