## Description

In the winter of 1948/49 Fassberg (ICAO: ETHS) loaded coal for Berlin, serving as one of the principal bases of the Berlin Airlift, and in August 2026 the site marked both that anniversary and 70 years since the Royal Air Force handed the station to the German Luftwaffe. The airfield on the Lüneburg Heath in Lower Saxony is military today, hosting the Luftwaffe's technical training centre for helicopter maintenance and logistics for both the army and the air force. There is no IATA code, no civil scheduled traffic, no freight handling and no customs post, so commercial shipments cannot be processed here. Companies in the Celle, Soltau and Uelzen area move air freight through Hannover (HAJ) some 80 kilometres to the south or Hamburg (HAM) roughly 90 kilometres to the northwest, both with cargo facilities and customs clearance. Full freighter capacity and outsize consignments are usually handled at Leipzig/Halle (LEJ), Germany's largest dedicated cargo base. Every routing starts with a road leg on the A7 motorway, which makes Fassberg a catchment location rather than a cargo location.
