## Description

Faro Airport (IATA: FAO, ICAO: LPFR) topped 10 million passengers for the first time in 2025, reaching about 10.3 million — up 6 percent — as the Algarve's tourism gateway. A large share of that traffic flies to and from Britain and Ireland, with Ryanair, easyJet and Jet2 providing most of the capacity; ANA Aeroportos de Portugal, a subsidiary of France's VINCI group, runs the airport and is delivering a €32.8 million upgrade programme as the field marks its 60th anniversary. Commercial airfreight is essentially not handled at Faro. The Algarve is supplied by road — trucked from greater Lisbon or from Andalusia, the Spanish border lying less than 60 kilometres away. Air shipments from the region accordingly route via Lisbon, or in the eastern Algarve via Seville and Madrid. The A22 motorway, the Via do Infante, passes right by the airport, and central Faro is seven kilometres away. The site has one distinctive trait: it borders the Ria Formosa natural park, whose lagoon landscape shapes the approach — and tightly limits any expansion.
