## Description

A handful of flights, a runway and a few hundred residents: Fangatau Airport (FGU) is one of the smallest scheduled airfields in the eastern Tuamotu islands, roughly 960 kilometres from Tahiti and serving the village of Teana. Air Tahiti calls irregularly with ATR turboprops, usually on multi-stop rotations linking Papeete and Raroia. There is no real cargo capacity: freight and mail travel in the belly hold or by infrequent supply ship, and the field has no cargo terminal, cold chain or handling agent. Air shipments are consolidated at Faa'a International Airport (PPT) in Papeete and forwarded as belly load; customs clearance also happens there, since French Polynesia is a French overseas collectivity outside the EU customs territory. Air Tahiti's public service concession for the island network ran to mid-2026 and had been disputed with the territorial government, so the longer-term arrangement for the small atolls cannot be verified from outside. For heavier or bulky consignments into the eastern Tuamotus, Hao (HOI) or Rangiroa (RGI) plus sea transport are the practical route.
